Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail (TWAT)

  • Itinerary: IL/WI border north of Galena, IL to the shores of Lake Superior near Cornucopia, WI (or further to Sand Bay, WI)
  • Direction of travel: S -> N
  • Length: 600-625 miles (portion S of I-94 can be easily avoided, as it's neither interesting nor adventurous)
  • Duration: around 1-2 days (I did it in one, as a personal challenge)
  • Terrain: ~50% paved, ~40% gravel, ~10% dirt/sand/forest/fire roads
  • Difficulty: easy, depending on the weather. If rain is in the forecast, bring recovery boards and rubber boots.
  • Vehicle needed: AWD or 4x4, high clearance preferred, but not required. Motorcycles permitted, but NO ATVs. The itinerary is slightly different between motorcycles and 4x4s. Pay extra attention at ATV crossings.
  • Attractions: forests, rivers, lakes, city/county parks, some wildlife
  • Permits required: none
  • Cell coverage: mostly none, spotty in some places, if lucky
  • Camping: available, but scarce; permit required
  • Gas: mind your fuel and fill up as often as possible
  • Bugs: bad in the summer
  • Vehicle damage: There is only one narrow forest road (FR 327, for about 5 miles starting at 46°02'26.3"N 90°43'28.0"W, north of Stock Farm Rd.) MAP that is barely vehicle-width and has many branches that will badly scratch your body paint. It's in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, before reaching the town of Clam Lake, just past the Stock Farm campground. This portion can be bypassed to the north-east, through the town of Glidden, WI: take Stock Farm Rd (167) east -> NE on Shanagolden Rd -> N on Bay Rd -> E on Blemel Rd -> town of Glidden). In Glidden, gas up, then proceed NW on WI-13 and then W on WI-77 to rejoin the TWAT.
  • History: Chad Berger stitched together the itinerary in 2007-2008, originally intended for motorcycles (see HERE)
  • Delta Diner: 14385 Co Hwy H, Mason, WI 54856. Phone: (715) 372-6666 www.deltadiner.com (reservations required; Monday is the popular 'burger day'; Tue-Sun 8am-2pm, Mon 10-7pm)
  • MAP including camps/hotels

  • GPX file (by Chad Berger)
  • as of early July 2020, two small bridges were out and being repaired, prompting slight detours
